Hi friends, family and study collegues! June 21st I will leave to Peru. For four months I will be doing the research for the master International Development Studies, University Utrecht.
The frontier region Madre de Dios in Eastern Peru is a very dynamic region: changing patterns in economic development, growing (urban) population and increasing international integration between Peru, Bolivia and Brazil make it an interesting region.
Because of it's great natural beauty and high biodiversity, the region is very attractive to tourists and ecological scientists. Tourism development in the region is therefore becoming a more and more present element in the region both in socio-cultural as well as in economic terms. The way tourism development takes place can take severeal directions. From mass tourism to small scale community based tourism, all with different socio-economic and environmental outcomes. In the Madre de Dios region several 'Community Based Tourism Initiatives' are present.
Community basically means: Tourism development run by or in cooperation with the community in order to benefit community development. To what extent the Community Based Tourism Initiatives in Madre de Dios indeed contribute to community development will be the central question of my research.
